“I’ve always loved baking and cooking, which I credit my Grandma for. I remember spending countless hours baking and cooking with her on the weekends, holidays and during the summer. I was lucky to grow up beside my grandparents so I spent countless hours in the kitchen with her. I’d make dinners and desserts for my family. Eventually baking pulled away from cooking and I began to spend more time baking and found a love for decorating.
My Mom bought me a starter decorating kit when I was probably 10-12 so I could ‘decorate’ the family birthday cakes. I slowly started teaching myself different techniques and found mentorship in two family friends that were also cake decorators. I give massive credit to these two ladies. They remain two people I turn to when I need help, guidance, or advice.
When I was about 15, I was asked to make a cake for a family friend and that was my first ‘order’ that was not simply a cake for a family member. Word of mouth and my sister creating my cake Facebook page launched Fallon Gene Cakes.
From there, I have expanded into cupcakes, sugar cookies and holiday treat boxes. I feel as though I have finally found my niche in the cake world!
My favorite thing in the world is when a customer will tell me a theme, a color scheme and ask me to create. I draw inspiration from all things around me. Often I’ll find myself writing down ideas late at night (when I probably should be sleeping!).
In the beginning of Fallon Gene Cakes, I would take any and every order because it was an opportunity for me to grow. I am still so incredibly thankful to everyone who took a chance on me and asked me to create their cake for their celebration, as without them, I would not have ever practiced and grown. Now that I have been doing cakes and desserts for a bit longer, I have learned what materials and ingredients I enjoy working with the most and which are going to help me achieve something I am proud of and my customer is happy with.”
This creative cake artist is currently teaching grade one and going to school. She will not be taking on more orders until spring. She has been doing a lot of designing, brainstorming and planning and has some exciting new creations coming soon!
