What is ‘Real Estate Photography’? An Interview With Katelyn Faulkner

When playing around on my social media I came across some really sophisticated photos of beautiful homes for sale in Kamloops, BC.  Who is taking these gorgeous photos, I wondered?  Well, I found the one taking the photos, a young, beautiful, driven lady named Katelyn Falkner!  And she agreed to do an article with me!  She is a ‘real estate photographer’, something I never knew existed!

Katelyn lives in Westsyde, Kamloops, with her husband and one-year-old daughter.  There is also a family dog in the group, one she describes as ‘energetic’! I wanted to know how she came to be a ‘real estate photographer’ and this working mom took time out of her busy day to answer my questions:

“I just took the leap and started my own photography business, Katelyn Faulkner Photography. Previous to this endeavor, I have worked the last six years as a realtor, property manager and admin for Brendan Shaw Real Estate. Prior to my real estate education, I obtained an event management certificate and pursued psychology and sociology at Okanagan College; it was a bit of a mixed bag.

While chasing a toddler around has slowed some of my hobbies down (I wouldn’t have it any other way), I love to be outdoors! Taking advantage of the miles of sandy beach along the river is where you can find us in the summer. My family enjoys hiking, mountain biking and skiing. I love to photograph scenery, which has been a hobby of mine for over the last 10 years. I like to dabble in Photoshop and expand my skills in that area.

What some may not know about me is that I have Cystic Fibrosis and it is one of the driving forces of what inspires and shapes my outlook on life. My favorite quote and life mantra is: you have been assigned this mountain to show others it can be moved.”

I wanted to know more about ‘real estate photography’.  How did Katelyn get into this line of work?  Here she talks about her journey:

“Real Estate photography, for me, is the art of capturing a space to make it look and feel its best.  The first house I photographed came from Brendan Shaw six years ago. He had this really charming house on Battle Street and I offered to take pictures of it, not really knowing my abilities to photograph real estate. They actually turned out pretty well for being an amateur, and that’s the moment when I learned I might have a bit of a knack for it.

From then on, he gave me the opportunity to photograph all of his listings. A couple years later I started expanding to photograph for other realtors in and out of the office. Since that first house on Battle Street, I feel that my image quality and processing has come a long way. It’s really neat to look back and see how much your work has changed over time.

I continued to pursue photographing real estate as I love the challenge of translating what you see in person into a photograph. Sometimes home owners see their place in a new light, and that’s one of my favorite parts. I enjoy the fact that every house is different and comes along with its own set of challenges and surprises.

Some challenges are around room sizes, dark spaces or color casts from light sources. Then I come across properties that have surprising architecture and those are usually the most fun and memorable for me to photograph.

Along with real estate agents and homeowners, I also get to work with developers and companies in capturing their projects, which is always a highlight and slightly different as it involves a little more time and finesse with the finished product.”

Katelyn is the owner and operator of Katelyn Faulkner Photography.  Her knowledge of real estate and what sells helps her rise to the top for clients. I wanted to know where she is going?  Here she talks about her future vision:

“Some professional goals are to increase traffic to my business and continue to hone in on my craft while finding better, faster editing processes. Some personal goals of mine are to increase advocacy for Cystic Fibrosis and the life changing medications that are available but not obtainable in Canada.”

Katelyn has a blog I have reviewed and it is very good.  Her blog covers current properties and houses that going on the market!  If you are looking for a house go to https://www.katelynfaulkner.com/blog!
