Rocking Vocals, Slaying Cancer

Kamloops musician Sabine Stanzer has always loved to sing. Born in Austria, the now 39-year-old artist travelled around the world before coming to Canada only two years ago. Music has always been a big part of her life and at age 16 she had her first punk rock band. That is when she decided she wanted to make music for a living, but life kept her busy with other things for several years.

In 2015, Sabine moved to San Pedro, Belize where she opened an Austrian restaurant with her mom. And she started singing again:

“First I sang only karaoke but I sang almost every night and I was so happy that I was able again to do what I love most and wherever there was karaoke you would find me.

One day a well known island musician came to me and asked me if I would like to join him on his gigs and sing some songs. As I write this I realize that he is the reason that I sing in a band again today. The day I started singing with him I remembered that this is what I really want to do and that it was time to follow my dreams. I learned so much from him and I’m so thankful for all he did for me.

A couple of months later I started to gig with another great musician from New York, a very passionate and high energetic performer just like me. It was magic how we complemented each other. We played at least four times a week and rocked the island until I decided to move to Canada, in August 2017.”

While living in Belize, Sabine met her Canadian girlfriend, and followed her to Kamloops where her family lives. Right after moving to Kamloops, Sabine joined the high energy rock band ‘Alset‘ as the lead singer. They gigged around Kamloops and area and had a great time, choosing at the end of 2018 to part ways in search of their own new projects

“In late summer of 2018 I decided to learn how to play the guitar and as a typical Aries I can’t be passive, still or excessively patient, so I went straight to the music store to buy a guitar! I wanted to start writing my own songs and I wanted to be able to perform on my own.

Since then I’ve written about 10 songs and I’m so glad that I decided to give it another try on the guitar. You can find all of my songs on my facebook page and on my Youtube channel.

I get often compared to Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge and Beth Hart because of my raspy, distinctive and unique rock/blues singing voice. I can sing quite beautifully, but then rare back and yell some lines. I’m on fire when I’m performing and I always perform with emotion and sing with feeling. I literally feel the music in my heart, body and mind!”

Aside from the music, Sabine works as a Barista at Frankly Coffee, a cute cafe on Victoria Street. She likes her boss, co workers and customers. She also loves her job because it keeps her my mind off of the cancer, a disease she was only recently diagnosed with:

“In mid 2018, just when everything was really picking up with my music career, I felt a lump.  I didn’t think anything of it at first, thinking it was just something that would go away.  But it didn’t.  Instead, it grew.  So in October I went to see a doctor and he sent me for all the usual exams.  I was shocked when the results came back positive for breast cancer.  I still remember being in the room with the surgeon.  He talked for about 45 minutes….I didn’t hear a thing.  The shock and fear overtook me in those moments, and my whole world stopped.

My biggest fear and worry was how I would tell my loved ones. I went home, cried for a while, and then got on the phone and called my parents.  That was the hardest phone call I’ve ever had to make.  After we all cried together and talked over the details, the shock started to wear off a little. It was time to come up with a plan.

Having watched many people I knew go through the conventional chemotherapy, surgery, radiation route….and die from it, I knew immediately this was not the way I wanted to go.  My family and I buckled down and researched on natural treatments and I have since been working with a naturopathic clinic.

Over the past 11 months, since my diagnosis, I have completely changed my diet to a raw, whole plant based, vegan diet.  I get regular high dosage vitamin C intravenous and mistletoe treatments, as well as ozone therapy at a local naturopath clinic.  In addition to this, I take various supplements to boost my immune system and every day I drink a fresh-pressed, vegetable juice full of nutrition and cancer fighting properties.

Although everything I do seems to have kept the cancer in check, as it does not appear to have spread…I fear it will not be enough to completely kick this very aggressive cancer.  I have had many great recommendations for this natural cancer clinic in Mexico, and we have been in contact with the clinic to start a treatment plan for me.  The good news is they believe they can help me!  The only issue is that the cost is high and not covered by medical insurance.  That is why I decided to start a gofundme page.  This treatment may very well save my life!”
